Who would have guessed that ole’ Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds, would pull a trifecta?  Joey didn’t hit but four homers all last season.  Apparently he’s been seeing the ball much better because he homered again Tuesday and
leads all NL rookies with eight homers and is second on the Reds with
20 RBIs.

Here’s to you Joey Votto!

The 2008 First-Year Player Draft for Major League Baseball will
take place June 5th and 6th.  The first round of the draft will be
televised live from Orlando, Florida on ESPN2.  The MLB First-Year
Player Draft is a lot different than the NFL or NBA drafts.  The NFL
has 7 rounds while the NBA only has 2 rounds.  Major League Baseball
has 50 rounds.  And unlike the NFL or NBA, being drafted does not
necessarily mean a player will sign.  Especially players that are
seniors in high school.  Instead, high school players drafted may opt
to attend college over playing in the minor leagues.   Another
difference is impact players.  The NBA and NFL will often see players
drafted and contribute to their teams immediately.  However, MLB is
quite different.  Players almost always have to hone their skills in
the minor leagues for a few years before being ready to play in the
Show.  The 2006 draft, though,  is already beginning to pay dividends
for some teams.  Players like RHP Max Scherzer with Arizona, RHP Time
Lincecum with San Francisco, RHP Ian Kennedy with the Yankees, 3B Evan
Longoria with Tampa Bay, LHP Andrew Miller drafted by Detroit and now
with Florida, RHP Luke Hochevar with Kansas City and RHP Brandon Morrow
with Seattle are all playing in the Majors right now.  Lincecum is
easily having the best season so far among these players.  He is off to
a 4-1 start and 1.49 ERA.

While
this year’s draft doesn’t seem to have as many talented pitchers
available it is loaded with position players that can really hit the
ball.  The Tampa Bay Rays will have the first pick again this year.
Last season they selected pitcher David Price from Vanderbilt with the
first overall pick.  We will know a month from now who the Rays and the
rest of the Major Leagues will select for their future investments.
